As college students around the country approach the midpoint of their fall semester, they have plenty on their mind: settling into campus life, studying for midterms, thinking about plans for the rest of the year. But for thousands attending college in the Southeast, the destruction from Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton has left them with more urgent questions: Where can I live? How can I rebuild? Can I really afford to stay in school?

To help meet students’ urgent needs, Target has provided $250,000 in initial funding for disaster relief emergency grants. Affected students in North Carolina and Florida can now apply for emergency aid awards up to $500 here.

“After the devastation of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, we’ve been working closely with communities to help them recover and rebuild,” said Ron Brown, Target VP of Community Impact. “In partnership with Scholarship America, Target is proud to help college students who are facing financial hardship after the recent hurricanes so they can continue to pursue their education and career goals.”

Scholarship America is proud to administer this vital emergency aid program, as part of our mission to eliminate barriers to education. With Target’s founding partnership and Scholarship America’s administrative expertise, we can ensure those in need are connected to vital support within a month of the storms.

Thanks to Target, this emergency aid program can do a great deal—and with support from donors around the nation, it can do even more.

Individuals who want to help students as they face unprecedented need can donate via GoFundMe. Target’s founding partnership funds will support administrative costs, so every individual donation goes directly to a student, putting them on the road to recovery quickly and ensuring that they can stay on track toward their goals even in the face of natural disasters.

“In the wake of a natural disaster, getting back to school can feel overwhelming,” said Scholarship America CEO Mike Nylund. “We are proud to partner with Target to help students rebuild, recover and pursue their dreams again.”
