Tom Brady has come a long way since he was first drafted by the New England Patriots in 2000.
After signing with the Pats, the football player eventually earned a G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) nickname thanks to his impressive skills on the field. Brady has even appeared in nine Super Bowl games, winning seven of them. (Brady helped the Pats win the Lombardi Trophy six times and once for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.)
After an impressive tenure with the Boston-based team, Brady announced in March 2020 that he was leaving the Pats for Tampa Bay’s NFL squad.
“Excited, humble and hungry …if there is one thing I have learned about football, it’s that nobody cares what you did last year or the year before that…you earn the trust and respect of those around through your commitment every single day,” the California native wrote via Instagram at the time. “I’m starting a new football journey and thankful for the @buccaneers for giving me an opportunity to do what I love to do. I look forward to meeting all my new teammates and coaches and proving to them that they can believe and trust in me…I have always believed that well done is better than well said, so I’m not gonna say much more – I’m just gonna get to work!”
After helping the Bucs win the Super Bowl during his inaugural season with the Florida-based team, the TB12 founder confirmed his professional retirement in February 2022.
“I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition — if a 100% competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game. There is physical, mental and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential,” he wrote via Instagram statement at the time. “And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life. This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes, I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”
Brady eventually reversed his decision just six weeks later and noted his intentions to return to the Bucs for another NFL season. Despite Brady’s excitement to hit the field with his teammates again, his professional career made headlines in August 2022 after it was announced that he was taking a leave of absence.
“Tom has been excused today. He’ll be taking … he’ll be back somewhere around after Tennessee,” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said during a press conference. “He’s going to deal with some personal things.”
As Brady sought to deal with his personal issues, reports swirled that his marriage to Gisele Bündchen was in jeopardy.
“Gisele was not happy when Tom un-retired from the NFL after such a short time,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly that September. “There is tension between them. They’re working through things and trying to come out the other side.”
The supermodel — who shares son Benjamin, born in 2009, and daughter Vivian, born in 2012, with Brady — has been candid about how she felt about her husband’s retirement.
“I’ve done my part, which is [to] be there for [Tom],” the Brazil native said in her Elle cover story in October 2022. “I moved to Boston, and I focused on creating a cocoon and a loving environment for my children to grow up in and to be there supporting him and his dreams. Seeing my children succeed and become the beautiful little humans that they are, seeing him succeed, and being fulfilled in his career — it makes me happy. At this point in my life, I feel like I’ve done a good job on that.”
She added: “I have a huge list of things that I have to do, that I want to do. At 42, I feel more connected with my purpose.”
As Brady and Bündchen remained tight-lipped on the specifics of their marital issues, the athlete touted fatherhood as one of his greatest achievements.
“I want ’em to obviously define something they love to do, but it would be really hard to follow in my football footsteps for sure, or my wife’s footsteps,” the quarterback — who also shares son Jack, born in 2007, with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan — exclusively told Us in June 2022 of his three kids. “I want them to find something where they can go into it without these exceedingly high expectations for themselves before these kids have had an opportunity to make mistakes.”
He added: “Kids are the best thing in the world. They just bring so much perspective into our lives and they’re so much fun. They’re the party. And at the same time, it’s a lot of energy! You better make sure you have it for ’em and just try to do the best you can. … I remember when they were newborns and to see ’em now and how they communicate to people … they kind of make me so proud!”
In October 2022, Brady and Bündchen confirmed their decision to split after nearly 14 years of marriage, revealing they’d already finalized their divorce. “We arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world in every way,” the football icon wrote in a statement shared via his Instagram Story. “We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve.”

After playing football in college, the Patriots picked Brady in the sixth round of the NFL draft.
Amid his flourishing football career, Brady found a romantic connection with Moynahan. After two years together, the pair called it quits shortly before Brady moved on with Bündchen. Within weeks of his new romance, the Blue Bloods alum learned she was pregnant with Brady’s child.
“It was definitely a surprise for both of us. In the beginning you’re living this romantic fantasy; you’re thinking, ‘This can’t be true, it’s so good!’ And then, Whoops — wake-up call!” Bündchen recalled to Vanity Fair in March 2009. “We were dating two and a half months when he found out, and it was a very challenging situation. Obviously, in the beginning, it’s not the ideal thing.”
Moynahan and Brady welcomed Jack in August 2007 and have remained committed to coparenting their son.
The Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life author and Brady tied the knot in a traditional Catholic ceremony in Santa Monica, California.
The married couple welcomed their eldest child, son Benjamin, less than one year after their nuptials.
Bündchen and Brady’s daughter, Vivian, completed the brood on December 7.
After the Patriots won the AFC Championship, opponent Indianapolis Colts criticized the team for using slightly deflated footballs against regulation. While Brady was accused of knowing about the Pats’ actions, he consistently denied the claims.
“I have no knowledge of anything. I’m very comfortable with saying no one knew. I don’t know what happened during the course of the process with the football. I was preparing for my game,” he said during a press conference. “I didn’t alter the ball in any way. I don’t believe I’m a cheater.”
The league eventually issued a four-game suspension to Brady for his alleged involvement after an investigation found that he was “at least generally aware” that the team’s balls had been tampered with before the Colts game.
Amid a GOAT-worthy career — and multiple MVP honors — with the Pats, Brady ultimately left in 2020. He later signed with the Bucs, moving his family’s home base from Boston to Tampa.
After his first year with Tampa Bay, Brady helped the NFL team win the Super Bowl that February. To celebrate, the athletes threw a rowdy yacht bash where Brady was spotted tossing the Lombardi Trophy in the air.
“First of all, there was not a lot going through my mind at that point. That was not smart — for a couple reasons,” he said on Good Morning America in April. “One is: If we drop it, that’s a little bit of a problem. But the worst thing that can happen is … the edges on that trophy are so sharp. Had [the trophy] clipped one of my boys in the other boat, it would’ve been an ugly parade.”
After sparking retirement speculation — which the supermodel notably approved of — Brady eventually decided to hang up his cleats.
“I’ve done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions. And I am so proud of what we have achieved,” he wrote in an Instagram statement. “My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it’s best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes.”
Less than six weeks later, Brady confirmed he had “unfinished business” with the Buccaneers and intended to return for his 23rd NFL season.
After his brief retirement, Brady told Us how he balances his family and career.
“There was a lot of decisions that are made and everything. I think the point is everything really comes at a cost — to choose one thing and not another. I just got to make sure I have things balanced out the way that I need to have them balanced out at,” he exclusively said. “So, I think for me, it’s just a matter of making sure in the off-season, I try to cover a lot of things and make sure a lot of things are taken care of. And then when a football season comes, I can really focus on football.”
He continued: “[During] the off-season, my family’s got a lot of time. I’ve enjoyed that. I can still do a better job of that. It’s just constantly trying to be a little bit better each day.”
As Brady started practices for the next NFL season, his Bucs coach made headlines in August when he announced that the star player would take a leave of absence while he dealt with “personal things.”
After Brady’s unretirement, his relationship status with Bündchen also appeared strained with a source telling Us that they were working through “tension” over his return to the NFL.
“Tom and Gisele are still not seeing eye to eye regarding his retirement,” a second insider explained.
As the twosome attempted to work through their marital problems, Us confirmed they were “currently living in separate houses” with a source noting that they are still in communication.
During a September game against the New Orleans Saints, Brady was spotted throwing his tablet on the ground. He later apologized for his emotional outburst via Twitter.
After reports surfaced that the Bucs would give Brady the day off each Wednesday, the businessman clarified his work schedule.
“The fact that I’ve worked weekends for the last 23 years, I do deserve one day off a week so I think maybe, and I don’t know if it’s Wednesdays, but I get Tuesdays off,” Brady said during an episode of his “Let’s Go!” podcast. “That’s probably good enough for me.”
As speculation continued to grow about his marriage, a source told Us that both Brady and Bündchen had hired divorce lawyers. “Gisele is waiting for Tom to make a big gesture of support to her,” the insider explained, adding that the pair were still “at odds” and were “living apart.”
During a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the athlete was spotted yelling at his teammates after being down in the first half. According to CBS News, Brady could be seen saying, “You are so much better than the way you are f—king playing!” at his offensive lineman. “You get your f—king ass kicked!” he yelled. The Buccaneers lost the game 20-18, marking the team’s third loss of the season.
Brady later addressed the public incident on his podcast, saying, “I don’t know if it’s motivation, but I do think that it’s a bad day when there’s more f-bombs than touchdowns. So, that was not one of my better days. But f-bombs, they used to kind of keep from showing you in those moments, but now it’s kind of for the world to see. So that’s just the way it is.”
Brady and Bündchen officially called it quits, announcing their divorce in separate statements shared via their social media accounts. “The decision to end a marriage is never easy but we have grown apart and while it is, of course, difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always,” Bündchen wrote in an Instagram Story, adding that the duo had “amicably finalized” their split. The athlete, for his part, said the pair “arrived at this decisions to end our marriage after much consideration.”
